Do you know that the state government of Queensland allows the teaching of Buddhism
to interested students in public primary and high schools, as part of religious
instruction?
The schools are able to get the assistance of BESS (Buddhist Education Services for Schools Inc.) to deliver this program with volunteer teachers provided by various Buddhist temples/centers. BESS provides a curriculum based on what has been successfully used by the Buddhist Education in Victorian Schools Project. Buddhism Studies are offered free and will be conducted in English. Classes will run during the Religious Instruction period, usually 30 minutes per week. Children do not have to be or become Buddhists to benefit from this Buddhist Studies program. The purpose of the program is to teach universal values that the Buddha taught to enhance children’s ability to better relate to themselves and to others. This is achieved by enhancing children’s qualities such as self-discipline, concentration, generosity, honesty, patience, compassion and self-fulfilment. This program will thus provide children with good values and life skills that will help promote a more harmonious and caring community. The curriculum consists of modules on the life of the Buddha and his foundation teachings. Simple meditation instructions at a level suitable for children will also be given. The methodology will be in keeping with contemporary educational thought and practice, involving the children and encouraging co-operation and enjoyment in learning. Who should consider applying for participation?
Buddhist education classes are offered in a number of public schools in South East Queensland. Please Click Here to see the list of schools. Parents interested in their children attending these classes will need to either contact the school to request for a consent form/letter for "Religious Instruction during school hours", or download it here. Please sign the consent form/letter indicating “Buddhist Studies” and then submit the completed form to the school. For more information and course contents, you are welcome to contact:
